Embedding You Tube Videos/Flickr Badges

Hi Everyone!

Here is a quick post explaining how to put a Youtube Video on your blog and embed a Flickr photostream on your blog...

Here is a video explaining how to embed a You Tube Video into your blog

How to put a flickr badge on your blog or website:

"Can I put my Flickr photos on my web site?

Yes! You can create a dynamic badge of your publicly viewable Flickr photos to add to your web site (outside of Flickr).

Use the wizard to set up your badge and show: your photos, group photos, or photos from everyone. You can also filter images by a certain tag.

Simply choose the display options (which photos, how many, what size) and specify if you want to display your screen name and buddy icon. Then choose either a styled version of the badge (photos appear in a column with a colored background) or one that you can design yourself. "

Assistive Technology

Tute 7: Assistive Technology

Hi Everyone!

This is the post for Tutorial seven where we looked at Assistive Technology. Occupational Therapist Dave Speden came to do a session with us on different types of assistive technology in which we were able to experience and have a play with a range of switches, voice recognition devices, special keyboards, mouses and toys.

Provide a definition of Assistive Technology:

"Assistive technology (AT) is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for
people with disabilities and includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them.
The Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (US Public Law 100-407) states that it is "technology designed to be utilized in an assistive technology device or assistive technology service."
AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the
technology needed to accomplish such tasks."

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity of the user?

It enables a person with a disabilty (either physical, intellectual or visual - or multiple) to use technology for communication, interatcion and switching things in the environemnt to create a reaction.
Switches can be utilized and connected to a range of mechanical devices e.g. elcetric beater, communication device, lights etc
Switches increase the functional capacity of the user by enabling them to ultilize aspects of their environment in a way that supports their ability (pressing on a large switch) to do everyday functional things.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir9Hs8lTAdc to see a child using a switch!

There are many different types of assistive technology available. Star education is a great site that offers a range of prodcuts that can enable a person with a disabilty to be able to interact with their enviornmment, develop new skills and enjoy activities.

The Internet + Online Communities

Tute 6: The Internet and Online Communities

Hi Everyone!

For this post I will be looking at online communities. The community I have chosen is spinchat.com.

The focus of the community
"All about spinchat.com
spinchat.com is an extensive online community with thousands of men and women you can get to know. Here you can create your personal homepage with a free blog, guest book, photos and much more. Registration only takes five minutes and then you can start blogging, chatting and discussing immediately. Furthermore, we offer a big chat and many
online games such as chess, backgammon and our chat games, for instance, our popular quiz chat.
You can chat immediately for free with many thousands of other people, no matter whether you are looking for a flirt chat or a general chat, if you are trying to find a partner, or if you are just bored, or if you want to meet people for serious discussions - you will always find nice people in our many chat rooms. Take part in our huge
discussion board.
Since 1996, we have been trying to provide you with a good online community and chat. This makes us one of the oldest online communities on the internet."

What services are provided? How interactive is the site? How can people contribute?

- Find new friends
In our cosy online meeting point with many boards and great chats
-Free homepage
Create your free homepage with photos, guestbook and blog.
- Play together
Play chess, backgammon, Tetrinet and many other games. Exchange virtual gifts.
- Many extras
Groups, event calendars with party pictures, photo voting and much more.

Anyone can join up an contribute in any of the above ways, the site appears very interactive.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

People would choose to contribute to an online community such as spinchat.com as it provides an outlet for discussion, socialising and ways to meet interetsing people who enjoy the same interests as them. People can feel like they belong to a specific group and can relate to a range of people without the pressure of actually meeting them. This could be an incentive for people to join the community. Some also go on the community to play the games with friends, share their life stories and photos and singles go on to look for love too!

An example of the topics being discussed includes:

Announcements, Books, Chatrooms, Computers and Technology, Cooking, Food & Drink, Discuss, Entertainment, Features / Bug Reports ..., Funny Things, Games, Internal, Music, Off-Topic, Poems, Politics / Society / Religion, Singles or Searching Chat Friends, Sports, VIP Board

(go to http://www.spinchat.com/topics/ to see more).

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

The potential ethical issues that may arise in this online community is that as it is so open and accessible, anyone can write anything about anyone -- this could lead to revealing personal information about others and the ability to bully people online without consequences. A person could post really offensive things in a discussion board and not be held accountable as it is simply a user-name they will using.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity

The benefits of this community is that people can relate and discuss with other people all around the world - in which they would normally have no access to very easily. This factor can be quiet benefical as it would mean increasing knowledge in specific areas, finding out about different cultures and finding out more about the world. It aids friends and families to share more information with each other (i.e. photos, stories) on a more regular basis even if they are geographically quite separate. It opens up a whole lot more opportunities for people to experience things with others that in the past was not possible due to distance.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.

Things in which this online community lacks in relation to traditional communities include...

YouTube: Video Prouduction

Hi Everyone! This post is still in relation to our video: Monkey Computer Issues.
In this blog I will discuss the services provided by YouTube and the process of story-boarding for our film!

YouTube

Services offered by YouTube:

'YouTube is the world's most popular video sharing web site. It enables individuals and groups to easily upload and share video with YouTube viewers from across the world.'
Retrieved 23rd march 2010 from http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/services/youtube

Story-Boarding:

Story-Boarding is the process you use when you are creating a video or film where you create a series of illustrations and sketches of the sequences in the video you are hoping to create. Its a lot like a comic strip where you illustrate what is going to happen in stages of boxes along the page.

Story-boarding really helped our group in our video production to keep us on the right track by being able to refer to the storyboard as to what to do next.
It was helpful for those of us who are Visual Learners (like myself) to be able to visualize the way each shot was going to be beforehand.

Our Video: Monkey Computer Issues

Hi Everyone!

For tutorials Weeks 4 & 5 we had to construct a video and look at various components to making one. Here is our 1min video titled: Monkey Computer Issues

As a group we had to come up with an idea for a video, which incorporated the theme 'overcoming adversity' and so we thought of a concept that suited us as students perfectly: issues with computers.
So throw in a monkey for some laughs, run like mad with a camera around the polytechnic and you have a video!

Hope you enjoy!

Blogging: Tute 3

Hi everyone!

This next post is on 'Blogger!' from Tutorial Three.

A brief summary of the services offered by blogger:

'Blogger is a blog storage service that allows private or multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. It is funded by on-screen ads. It was created by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003.The service itself is located at http://www.blogger.com/. Generally, the blogs are hosted by Google at sub-domains of blogspot.com.'

Retrieved Tuesday 23rd March 2010 from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blogger_%28service%29

A blog is like a diary where anyone can write anything they want about things happening in their life... or other peoples lives (like celebrities).

Another blog host is WordPress.com

That's what I have found out about blogging. My next post will be on Video Production Sessions.

Digital Camera - use and applications

Hi everyone!

Here is my third posting, based on our second tutorial for Particiapation in Occupation 1. Our second tute covered the areas of: setting up a tripod and camera in a fixed and stable position, turning digital camera on and capturing 10 Jpeg images, uploading images to computer, export images to webhost flickr.com (as you can see at the top of my blog) and lastly discuss and comment on the function and use of digital technology via completion of a set group of questions in which I will now cover:

1. "A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature." Breifly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera techology holds in relation to more tradtional film based cameras?

Although digital camera technology is a faster, digital way of taking photographs, it can be said it is far from superior than traditional photography. My sister is a photography student at Massey University and she generally chooses to use a traditional SLR camera or even her Hasselblad from the 1970s or so, over a digital or digital SLR camera so that says something of quailty.

It can be considered similar to the difference between an automatic car and a manual one, you get better performance with the manual. A plus to digital photography is it's instant, within seconds you get to see the image you captured, and within minutes you can share it with the world. With traditional cameras it takes time to develop the shots and you need a 'dark room' and specific equipment. Digital photographs can be uploaded on internet sites, however which can been seen as both a plus and minus for ethic reasons.

2. List some of the ways digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communications technology:

When you first take an image/photograph using a digital camera it can be instantly stored on the camera itself and on a memory stick. You can then transfer this image onto your computer where you can save to your computers hard-drive, print it out, manipulate vertually everything about it on programmes such as 'photoshop' and most importantly upload it to the internet via email or posting on a site. This in turn means it can be manipulated further by other people. You can also scrap-book the photograph you printed or put it in an album.

3. Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical isues may arise with their use:

As mentioned above, a person with a digital camera can take a picture of anyone, anywhere and then upload it onto the internet for everyone to see. The picture can be manipulated to alter it negatively and make even an innocent photograph be turned negative, by either the photographer, or anyone who manages to download it from the internet therefore the privacy of the person is violated.

4. Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice (include reference and inks to any web sites, or blogs you might come across):

'Methods that use video or other visual data offer occupational therapy and occupational science researchers great potential for the study of occupation in all its contextual complexity. Video methods are used across disciplines in both quantitative and qualitative designs' and 'Video research has been useful in examining the effectiveness of occupational therapy. Guidetti and Soderback (2001) used video in a multiple case study design to analyze improvement in dressing and undressing skills. Tham and Tegner (1997) studied the difference in effectiveness of video and verbal feedback to individuals with unilateral neglect... Video data has also been regularly used in occupational therapy to develop, standardize, and insure the validity and reliability of research and intervention instruments.'

Retrieved March 3rd, 2010, from www.thefreelibrary.com/The+usefulness+of+video+methods+for+occupational+therapy+and+...-a0208219469

5. Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com:

Flickr is an image and video hosting website, web services suite, and online community. In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.[2] As of October 2009, it claims to host more than 4 billion images.[3]

Retrieved March 4th, 2010 from www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flickr

6. Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com:

www.photobucket .com

7. Explain what the difference is between a digital and optical zoom:

'It's important to understand this difference, as you could end up mighty disappointed with the results if you get one rather than the other. Optical zoom is similar to what you'll find in a regular 35mm camera: When you push the button to zoom in or out, physical lens elements move inside the camera, to achieve the desired effect.

Digital zoom, on the other hand, has no moving parts. Using the "electronic brain" within the camera instead, the camera takes a look at what it's "looking at", and digitally zooms in, usually two or three times closer.

The problem with digital zoom is that you lose quality when you do this -- your images will tend to be more "pixelated" than the same image taken with an optical zoom camera. This is due to the "interpolation" the camera uses, which is a nice way of saying that it makes a guess about how the picture should look while zoomed in. Having optical AND digital zoom on a camera isn't bad, but I'd try to avoid cameras with only digital zoom, myself.'

Retrieved March 4th, 2010, from www.dcresource/faqfaq.html

8. Explain what is meant by the term megapixel:

'A megapixel (that is, a million pixels) is a unit of image sensing capacity in a digital camera. (A pixel - a word invented from "picture element" - is the basic unit of programmable color on a computer display or in a computer image.) In general, the more megapixels in a camera, the better the resolution when printing an image in a given size. A digital camera with a 1.3 megapixel resolution will print a good quality 4 x 3 inch print at 300 dpi (dots per inch). If a higher quality is needed or a larger print at the same quality, a camera with a higher megapixel value will be needed.

The number of images that can be stored in a given size of flash memory for the camera is determined by the size of the flash memory and the size of each image in terms of megapixels.'

That is the last of the questions for this post.
